Understanding your non-residential water bill
Water bills are issued three times a year at the same time as residential customers.
A typical non-residential bill can have up to six charges:
- Water access charge – this is a fixed charge
- Sewerage access charge – this is a fixed charge
- Trade waste administration charge – this is a fixed charge
- Water consumption charge – this is for the amount of water you use in the billing period
- Sewerage treatment charge – this is based on the water you used in the billing period
- Trade waste treatment charge – this is based on the water you used in the billing period
The water and sewerage access charges are based on the number and size of the meters servicing your property. Each meter size has a ‘base’ annual charge for water and sewerage. For the current ‘base’ charges see Fees and Charges – Water Supply & Sewerage.
For sewerage the ‘base’ charge is also multiplied by the meters sewer discharge factor (SDF) which is displayed on the water bill. For a meter with a SDF of 0.95 this assumes that 95% of the water passing through the meter is being discharged back down the sewer.
The trade waste administration charge is based on the number of trade waste treatment facilities onsite, with an amount for the first facility and a lesser charge for the second and subsequent facilities. For charges see Fees and Charges – Trade Waste.
The water consumption charge is a flat charge over the year for the water you use in the billing period.
The sewerage treatment charge is based on the water consumed in the billing period multiplied by the sewerage treatment charge ($/kL) for the financial year multiplied by the SDF for the meter.
The trade waste treatment charge is based on the water consumption in the billing period multiplied by the trade waste treatment charge ($/kL) multiplied by the trade waste discharge factor (which is different to the SDF).
