Write Around the Murray returns for 2024

Friday 16 August 2024

The Write Around the Murray (WAM) Festival returns to Albury in 2024 with an engaging program of award-winning authors, illustrators and storytellers - and a new festival director.

A signature AlburyCity event, WAM is a five-day writers’ festival that occurs every September in Albury.

This year, the festival carries the theme ‘Stories Within Stories’ and offers more than 80 programs to the public, 30 programs to schools and runs across two states at venues including the Albury LibraryMuseum, MAMA, Hyphen Wodonga and HotHouse Theatre.

Tickets are currently on sale at the WAM website: www.writearoundthemurray.org.au. WAM will run from Wednesday 11 September to Sunday 15 September.

In 2024, organisers are thrilled to welcome the legendary Kate Grenville (shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction) as the author of the WAM 2024 Book of the Festival, Restless Dolly Maunder.

This year, festival goers can delve into stories within stories and all their different formats. These include:

  • Social satirist Siang Lu talking cinema and his two books (The Whitewash and Ghost Cities) with a retrospective screening of Enter the Dragon at the Regent Cinema
  • Award-winning First Nations author Ellen van Neerven and their new play Swim, and comedian and actor Jane Clifton and her show A Day at a Time in Rhyme
  • The ever-popular annual Literary Lunch will feature Shirley Le and her novel Funny Ethnics
  • A very special, free WAM4Kids and WAM Schools program, including a celebration of 50 years of the works of Hazel Edwards, author of There’s a Hippopotamus on My Roof Eating Cake, plus Danny Katz and Mitch Vane with their new Little Lunch books, as well as Leigh Hobbs, George Ivanoff, Chris Kennett and Nova Weetman
  • Panels about Star Wars and Dr Who, stand-up comedy, visual art, historical fiction and cultural appropriation
  • A dessert masterclass with the winner of Dessert Masters, chef Gareth Whitton
  • And Stereo Stories, the WAM Poetry Slam, masterclasses, workshops, writing competitions, exhibitions and history and art tours.

In 2024, Write Around the Murray welcomed a new festival director/coordinator, Aimee Chan. Aimee is an internationally award-nominated author, podcaster and content creator who has lived in Albury for 10 years.
