Community feedback needed for speed zone review

Tuesday 26 November 2024

The Albury community will have the opportunity to provide feedback on a proposed review of speed zones across the city following Albury City Council’s endorsement of a stakeholder engagement plan for the project.

The speed zone review is the result of community consultation during the development of Council’s Integrated Transport Strategy (MOVE), which identified the community’s desire for lower speed limits to make the city more walkable and enjoyable.

Consequently, MOVE contained an action to review speed zones in built-up areas in accordance with the NSW Movement and Place framework.

Transport for NSW is the sole responsible authority for managing and determining vehicle speed zones on NSW roads. Council is only able to advocate in this space and is required to submit a request to Transport for NSW for undertaking any reviews.

Council is proposing to advocate for the review of speed zones on roads in central and East Albury, Lavington and Thurgoona, including sections of Borella Rd, David St, Dean St, Kiewa St, Mate St, Union Rd and Wodonga Place.

The endorsed stakeholder engagement plan outlines how the community can contribute to the review.

Albury Mayor, Kevin Mack, said it was important for the community to provide feedback on speed zones around the city.

“We know through the consultation for MOVE that the community wanted generally lower speed zones, but this round of engagement will enable us to drill down to individual areas and roadways,” he said.

“That way, when it comes to submitting our request to Transport for NSW, we can be confident that what we’re asking for is supported by community feedback.”

The engagement process is expected to begin in January next year, with a view to reporting back to Council in April.
