Citizenship to return to Australia Day

Monday 28 October 2024

Albury City Councillors have voted to reinstate a citizenship ceremony during community celebrations on Australia Day 2025.

The resolution includes an acknowledgment of the community feedback received in response to a survey conducted after this year’s events on and around 26 January.

Results showed 63% of the 2,107 survey respondents were not supportive of moving the ceremony away from Australia Day.

The resolution commits Council to consulting the community about the format of Australia Day 2025.

Albury Mayor, Kevin Mack, welcomed the Council’s decision.

“I look forward to seeing a citizenship ceremony returned to Australia Day, and I thank the community for their input on this issue,” he said.

In 2024, Council welcomed new citizens on 29 January in accordance with the recently changed Australian Government code on Australia Day citizenship ceremonies, allowing ceremonies to take place three days on either side of 26 January.

This was one of six citizenship ceremonies scheduled by AlburyCity during 2024.The change of format also included the staging of the Albury Awards on the evening of 19 January 2024 and a family fun event at Noreuil Park on Australia Day.

The results of the 10-week community consultation in 2024 were considered by Council in May. Councillors resolved to increase city-funded activity at Noreuil Park on Australia Day, but no change to the Albury Awards or citizenship events.

In June 2024, the Aboriginal Advisory Committee was consulted regarding events on and around 26 January, and representatives re-affirmed their position that not conducting a citizenship ceremony on 26 January was a respectful gesture.

Preparations for the 2025 Albury Awards are in full swing, with nominations now open and the event scheduled for Saturday, 25 January at 6.00 pm.
