The finishing touches are being applied to the new Elizabeth Mitchell Drive-Thurgoona Drive intersection, with the crossing set to be commissioned by late-May, subject to approval by Transport for NSW (TfNSW).
Contractors are on site, installing cables and other infrastructure prior to the erection of poles and traffic lights.
The new traffic signals will become live once approved by TfNSW. All going well, the intersection will be fully operational on the same day.
However, until the site is fully open, traffic controls remain in place and motorists are urged to drive through the intersection with caution.
The fully signalised intersection is designed to meet the needs of the growing Thurgoona-Wirlinga community, to ensure traffic flows effectively as the area’s population expands.
The project has involved transforming the old, congested single-lane arterial roundabout intersection into a multi-lane traffic signalised intersection with dedicated left turn slip lanes on Thurgoona Drive.
The new intersection will have:
This upgrade will improve traffic flow and ease congestion, make it easier for motorists to access the Hume Freeway and improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is part of our ongoing work to improve transport infrastructure to meet the needs of Thurgoona/Wirlinga, which is forecast to be home to 50,000 people in less than 50 years.
