Council to seek speed limit review following community feedback

Friday 13 June 2025

AlburyCity councillors have endorsed a recommendation to request Transport for NSW (TfNSW) undertake a speed zone review on a number of local roads, following community engagement undertaken for key areas.

MOVE: The Albury Wodonga Integrated Transport Strategy, adopted in 2023, identified that many arterial roads in Albury were historically designed to cater for highway traffic with speed limits of 60kmph or higher. With the construction of bypasses and ring roads, these roads now serve different purposes.

Council undertook public consultation in June 2024 regarding the existing speed zones on 25 street segments across the city.  A total of 313 submissions were received.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said it was important to share the community’s feedback with TfNSW which reviews speed zones to ensure they evolve with transport safety needs.

“Speed zones are reviewed regularly to benefit the community and reduce the road toll,” said Mayor Mack. “I think that summarises why we should ask for a review.”

In the Lavington CBD, two-thirds of respondents would like to see the current 60kmph speed limit reduced. Similar responses were received for several Thurgoona locations, including:

  • Thurgoona Drive (Evesham Place to Litchfield Drive), where 68% of respondents (19) would like to see the 80kmph speed zone reduced; and
  • Elizabeth Mitchell Drive (between Thurgoona Drive and Riverina Highway), where 53% of respondents (19) would like to see the 80kmph speed zone reduced.

Those who requested changes to existing limits across the city raised a range of concerns, including pedestrian safety - particularly in busy retail areas - reduced traffic noise and emissions, and better conditions for people walking and riding, and other vulnerable road users.

The most discussed areas were the Albury CBD and Riverina Highway (Drome Street to Table Top Road), each attracting 41 responses, followed by the Lavington CBD with 32.

As TfNSW is the authority responsible for setting speed limits across New South Wales including the Albury Local Government Area, Council will now submit the community feedback to request a formal speed zone review be undertaken.

Any decisions made by TfNSW will be guided by the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines, which consider safety outcomes alongside how streets are used as shared spaces in the community.
