Water Mains Cleaning Program

To help maintain a safe and reliable water supply for our community, AlburyCity regularly engages a qualified contractor to carry out water mains cleaning.

Caring for Our Water Network

To keep your drinking water safe and flowing the way it should, AlburyCity carries out regular water mains cleaning across the city. This routine maintenance helps prevent sediment build-up in the pipes, using a process called air scouring.

The work is carried out by trained contractors and is carefully managed to avoid environmental impacts. While there may be short water outages for some properties, we’ll always let you know ahead of time and provide simple steps to prepare. This is one of the many ways we maintain a reliable and high-quality water supply for our community—and we appreciate your support while the work is underway.

  • To help maintain a safe and reliable water supply for our community, AlburyCity regularly engages a qualified contractor to carry out water mains cleaning using a method called air scouring.

  • What is air scouring? keyboard_arrow_right

Air scouring involves flushing a mix of compressed air and water through hydrants to remove naturally built-up sediment from our water mains. This keeps our drinking water clean and flowing the way it should. The process is carefully managed to ensure there’s no impact on the surrounding environment.

  • Some homes and businesses may experience a temporary water outage during the works. If your property is affected, you’ll receive a letter with the date and time your water will be turned off.

  • How can I prepare? keyboard_arrow_right

We recommend filling a few containers or kettles in advance to cover your water needs during the interruption. Your toilet cistern won’t refill, so having a bucket of water ready for flushing can also be handy—just tip it straight into the bowl. To protect water quality in your home, we also suggest turning off your stop tap during the work.

  • What happens after the works? keyboard_arrow_right

If your stop tap remained on, you might notice discoloured water or a slight chlorine taste. This is temporary and the water is still safe to drink. Just run your front garden tap for about 15 minutes until the water clears.
